Teaching at the Right Level (Phase 2)

This project aims to enhance foundational language and numeric skills among upper primary school children, using the internationally recognized Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology. By focusing on both academic performance and attitudes toward education, the initiative seeks to improve learning outcomes and foster a stronger commitment to basic education.

Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is a program developed by the Indian NGO Pratham. It has been proven to strengthen foundational skills in math and reading. TARL is a simple, evidence-based approach that targets the root of the learning crisis by ensuring that teaching starts at the level of the child, regardless of age or grade. Children are grouped according to their current learning levels and a time is set aside to build core reading and math skills through engaging activities that focus on learning progress. Teachers focus on building core skills, with simple one-on-one assessments being used regularly to track progress in reading and math.

Over the past 15 years, rigorous evaluations by J-PAL–affiliated researchers have shown that TaRL delivers some of the largest and fastest learning gains among education programs worldwide. Continuous innovation, research, and collaboration with governments and partners  have enabled Pratham to refine and expand this impactful model.

Expected Outcomes

  •  Improved foundational skills for 15,000 students in reading and math, including fluent reading, reading comprehension, number recognition, and basic numeracy operations, by the end of the project period.
  • Enhanced capacity of teachers, volunteers, and supervisors to effectively plan, implement, and monitor learning activities using the TaRL approach.
  • Demonstrated student progression, with clear evidence of children advancing from one learning group to the next as their proficiency improves, tracked through regular assessments.

Evaluation

Evaluation will be measured through pre- and post-intervention assessments, ensuring data-driven insights.
